HUAWEI IPTV

2015-2016
UI Design

Project Overview

In 2015, I joined the Huawei 2012 Lab UCD IPTV team, mainly responsible for the UI design work of the IPTV business.

The project is divided into two levels: the baseline focuses on creating high-quality functionality and experience templates, while the external business optimizes based on the baseline for the needs of different overseas regions.

During this period, I mainly participated in the design of the baseline project and was involved in the development of IPTV projects in several countries, including Serbia, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

My Role & Contributions

As one of the four designers in the team, I was responsible for UI design. Together, we accomplished the following tasks:

  • Completed experience optimization design for Web, Pad, and iOS platforms in the baseline version, ensuring consistency across all platforms
  • Deliver comprehensive visual design specifications and establish a reusable library of key elements that provide the foundation for the establishment of white label specifications

Baseline Project: Real 7+

Real 7+ builds upon the previous baseline version, introducing 40+ new features while optimizing user experience across PC, Tablet, and Phone platforms for consistent visual and interactive design.

These features include: video browsing, video playback, series content subscription, multi-account management, social account binding, self-service functions (viewing history, transaction history), social sharing features (share, comment, like), among others.

What I did

As a junior UI designer, I mainly collaborate with the team to design and expand interfaces based on the main style, such as the layout of the home screen, playback interface, and detail pages.

In the later stages of the project, I began to follow my mentor to learn how to create design standard documents and completed the design work for all mobile and some web and tablet design specifications.

What I gained

The Real 7+ project has taught me three important lessons that I have benefited from ever since:

  1. I learned how to work as a team on a large project and how to work effectively with colleagues in different roles
  2. By following Deutsche Telekom's strict standards, we have cultivated a working attitude of striving for perfection and a spirit of craftsmanship with patience
  3. I also deeply understand the value of design specifications, which are not only the basis for project collaboration, but also the accumulation of reusable technologies, which can effectively support the development of subsequent projects

Customized Projects: STC & Qatar Ooredoo IPTV

It is mainly optimized according to the requirements of the features added by the project party, adding feature design, and optimizing part of the original design to ensure the consistency of the experience.

What I did

My main job is to design page extensions for new features based on the main visuals defined by the mentor, including

Ooredoo IPTV:

home screen design, program list, video playback timeline visualization, added routing design, remote control input process, Multi-Rooms feature (can connect multiple set-top boxes), and other functional pages.

STC IPTV

program list, program details, remote control pairing process and other functional pages

Unfortunately, due to the project being many years in the past, many files have been lost, and the project also involves confidentiality agreements, I can only show the overall effect diagram of the project.

What I gained

These two projects were substantial in scale, yet they didn't leave a strong impression on me. The work mainly involved rapid page expansion based on established specifications, which felt somewhat mechanical and repetitive.

This experience made me realize that I was more passionate about work that involves deep thinking and innovation, rather than just page production.

This desire for breakthrough and growth led me to seek a new direction after completing the project phase.
